Bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea, boba milk tea, or simply boba, is a Taiwanese tea-based drink that often contains chewy tapioca balls, known as “bubbles” or “pearls.” This popular beverage has grown in popularity in the past few decades, and it’s now found in many countries around the world. The history of bubble tea dates back to the 1980s in Taichung, Taiwan. It is said that the drink was first created by a tea shop owner, Tu Tsong-he, who added a mixture of sweetened tapioca balls to cold tea. The drink was an instant hit, and it quickly spread throughout Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Bubble tea is typically made with a tea base, such as green tea, oolong tea, black tea, or jasmine tea. The tea is then mixed with flavored syrups, fruit juices, and/or milk. The drink can also be served hot or cold. Making bubble tea is easy and fun!
Here are the steps to make a classic boba milk tea:
1. Start by brewing your favorite tea.
Black tea is most commonly used for bubble tea, but you can also use green tea, oolong tea, or jasmine tea.
2. Once the tea is brewed,
combine it with sugar and a flavored syrup, such as lychee or honeydew. You can also add fruit juices for extra flavor.
3. Heat up a pot of water
and add a few teaspoons of tapioca pearls. Boil the pearls for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Once the tapioca pearls are cooked,
drain them and rinse them with cold water.
5. To assemble your bubble tea,
add the tapioca pearls to the cup with the tea and sweetener, and mix everything together.
